SAFE: Services to End Domestic Violence Against Women with Disabilities

In 2019, LAWO was awarded $450,000 by the U.S. Department of Justice, Office on Violence Against Women, for the Disability Grant Program. With the grant funds, LAWO created the Safety and Accessibility for Everyone (SAFE) project, a three year project based in Lucas County. LAWO is partnering with ABLE and Bethany House to identify and eliminate organizational barriers that inhibit accessibility of our services for individuals living with disabilities who are experiencing domestic violence.

The goal of the Disability Grant Program is to create sustainable change within and between organizations that improves the response to individuals with disabilities and Deaf individuals who are victims of domestic violence, dating violence, stalking, and sexual assault and to hold perpetrators of such crimes accountable. Disability Grant Program funds are used to establish and strengthen multidisciplinary collaborative relationships; increase organizational capacity to provide accessible, safe, and effective services to individuals with disabilities and Deaf individuals who are victims of violence and abuse; identify needs within the grantee’s organization and/or service area; and develop a plan to address those identified needs that builds a strong foundation for future work.

The SAFE collaboration focus is survivors who have physical and mental health disabilities. For more information about the SAFE project, visit Safety & Stability for Domestic Abuse Survivors.
