Giving Tuesday
As we come off the Thanksgiving holiday, it is time to reflect on how your gift can make a difference. Giving Tuesday is December 3, 2024.
When the seasons change, it is a time of reflection on how we have given back to the community and helped those in need. Take a moment to take stock and think about those things you might take for granted – a home with heat, electricity and running water, a career you love, or simply time spent with family.
At the Justice for All Campaign and Campaign for Equal Justice, we are actively out in the community sharing the need for civil legal help in the communities we serve. For those reaching out for help through the legal aid line, the very items you take for granted are not always available and would make a world of difference. It is when each of us takes a moment to give back and make a donation, that those who need help the most can move forward and improve their lives by overcoming the obstacles they face.
Every day at Legal Aid of Western Ohio (LAWO), Advocates for Basic Legal Equality (ABLE), the Toledo Bar Association (TBA), and the Greater Dayton Volunteer Lawyers Project (GDVLP), attorneys and volunteers provide the help needed to improve lives and make a difference. In many cases, we assist when our clients, the people who are not able to afford high-quality civil legal representation, need help the most. By making a gift today, you are making it possible to keep someone in their home who was facing eviction or a child in school who was not getting the help they need to be able to learn in the classroom.
At each organization, our staff and volunteers help clients navigate the legal system in matters such as evictions, families who need help keeping their children in school, and those dealing with domestic violence.
At LAWO, Lucinda helped her client navigate a domestic violence situation, and now she is on a path to success.
With your donation, you made it possible for her client to leave an abusive situation, find stable housing, and retain custody of her kids. Lucinda worked with this client to help her establish a new life that was safe and secure for herself and her children.
Anna had been in an abusive situation for years and her spouse threatened to take her children if she dared to leave.
Lucinda helped Anna connect with community resources to find stable housing, establish protection, file for divorce, and get a job.
Anna’s story is just one example of how the daily work at LAWO makes a difference in the lives of those we help. Your gift helps us help people just like Anna every day.
ABLE works with community organizations as well as individuals needing help.
Housing stability is a pressing issue throughout the area we serve. Last Spring, Mike worked with Yellow Springs Home, Inc. to help them secure land so that affordable housing in Yellow Springs could be developed.
Mike assisted with a land trust issue that provided the land needed for a new Affordable Home Subdivision in the Yellow Springs area.
With the help of ABLE, the issue has been resolved, and ground has broken on the site of the new affordable home subdivision in Yellow Springs.
Without his help and your donation, the new affordable housing would not be a reality.
Rhonda called TBA for help when her application for a small home equity loan was denied.
Rhonda, a widowed grandmother on a fixed income, needed the loan to have necessary repairs made to her roof. She had paid off her mortgage years earlier and knew she had good credit, but the loan company denied her application because she had a mortgage against her property.
Mr. Bishop, TBA pro bono volunteer, volunteered to help Rhonda. He was able to obtain copies of the mortgage release issued by the initial lender and convinced the recorder’s office to accept its filing, thereby clearing Rhonda’s title.
Rhonda was finally able to obtain a small home equity loan and have her roof repaired, preserving the value of her modest home.
GDVLP helps keeps people in affordable housing.
Through the Greater Dayton Volunteer Lawyers Project, a client needed help finding a new home after his landlord wanted to double his rent.
Steven was having an issue with a prior eviction and was being rejected from possible housing.
Working with the GDVLP, He was able to have his past eviction sealed and was able to find a new home that was safe, clean, and affordable.
Your donation makes it possible to help Steven and the many others facing similar situations that contact us every day.
Within each of these organizations, clients just like Steve, Anna, Rhonda, and Yellow Spring Homes reach out for help. They simply need a hand up to be able to move forward. Your gift helps those that need it the most. Your help enables the quality legal staff of all three organizations to touch the lives of so many and make a positive impact. Take the time today to support the work that LAWO, ABLE, TBA, and the GDVLP do each day. Your gift will help close the justice gap and help those that need it the most.
