Staff Attorney (ABLE Toledo)

Advocates for Basic Legal Equality, Inc. (ABLE), a non-profit regional law firm that provides high-quality legal assistance to low-income persons and groups in western Ohio, seeks a dynamic, bright, hardworking attorney who would serve as an advocate for children in poverty with the Medical-Legal Partnership for Children (MLPC) in our Toledo office.

Join the movement to transform public health! The MLPC combines the strengths of law and medicine to address systemic issues affecting children's health. The Attorney will provide legal representation to low-income families and work closely with pediatricians and other healthcare providers at hospitals and clinics in western Ohio to develop impact advocacy and creative strategies to combat health-harming legal needs. The Attorney will advocate for policy changes designed to help improve health and justice outcomes for vulnerable populations and decrease health disparities. The project is a collaboration between ABLE, Legal Aid of Western Ohio, Inc. and area children's hospitals and clinics. The Attorney must have excellent interpersonal skills and be experienced in working in collaborative and group environments. Applicant must have an interest in systemic advocacy and community lawyering. Membership in Ohio Bar or ability to be admitted by motion or temporary certification is required. Excellent legal and communication skills; experience with case management software and Microsoft Office; familiarity with database and GIS mapping software preferred. Ability to relate well with low income clients and commitment to legal services to the poor required. Minimum of two years legal experience, including federal impact litigation experience, preferred. Previous experience in areas of special education, housing law, government benefits, or poverty law in general is highly preferred. Ability to communicate fluently in Spanish is helpful. Salary depends on relevant legal experience. Excellent fringe benefits.
