Protecting yourself from identity thieves

OCTOBER 21, 2009

Protecting yourself from identity thieves

Message from the Ohio Attorney General

Ohioans filed more than 8,000 identity theft complaints in 2008, and it seems clear that many others who did not file reports also were affected by this growing crime. This week, National Protect Your Identity Week, take some time to learn more about identity theft:

Message from the Ohio Attorney General

Identity theft is when someone uses another person's personal identifying information to open a credit card account, take out a loan or even commit a crime. These thieves can ruin their victims' credit and send them into debt.

It is important to recognize the dangers posed by identity theft to protect yourself from scammers or, in the event of being targeted, to know where to go for help. For valuable information about identity theft, please visit [the Web site above].

Pass this information on to your friends and loved ones so that they too can protect themselves from this crime.

Sincerely,

Richard Cordray
Ohio Attorney General
